Marvel Studios is about to release it's new animated series, 'What If!', whose first episode premieres on August 11 2021. From the trailers, we have come to know that this show, will focus on the multiverse, and we get to see it all unfold through the eyes of Uatu The Watcher.
The Watcher can obviously peer through multiple realities and see the various versions of all the characters and we did see the other Watchers observing Stan Lee in The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, but what does Uatu the Watcher do? Why doesn't he interfere in any scenario? And most importantly where does he come from..?
So Here's Who is Uatu The Watcher:-
Billions of years ago, The Watchers, a very technologically advanced race, decided that it was their duty to help the less advanced species in the universe. The first planet they went to was Prosilicus. Ikor, the then leader of the Watchers and the father of Uatu gave the Prosilicans, the knowledge of atomic energy, but this experiment failed as the Prosilicans used this knowledge to fight each other, this resulted in the Self-Genocide of the planet.
After this failure, Ikor made the Code of the Watchers, which stated that the Watchers were to only passively observe, as events unfolded on various planets, but they were not supposed to interfere with these events, no matter what the situation. Uatu believed in these ideals. Since then, these people have been known as the Watchers.
The Watchers then assigned themselves to the Moons of the various worlds they were to observe. Uatu was assigned with the Earth and he constructed a citadel on the moon. Uatu even looked at Earth in various different realities, but he hasn't found the Perfect Earth yet.
Uatu's first recorded human encounter, happened in 1602 A.D, when a person from the future was sent to the past, which tore a fabric through reality. This tear was repaired with the then Sorcerer Supreme and the timeline was restored.
The Watcher's base was exposed by Howard Stark and Nathaniel Richards in the 1950's. The Watcher was paid a visit by Stephen Strange, when the latter was learning the Mystic Arts. He even told Strange that Reed Richards, Bruce Banner and Henry Pym, will be the beacons of the future.
The Watcher has been an Important part of the MCU and has definitely made an effect on the Characters and their actions. The Watcher has been involved in various story-lines like:
Fantastic Four Meet The Watcher
Protecting The Earth from Kang The Conqueror, by Sending the Fantastic Four after him.
He protected the Earth from Galactus, by giving the Heroes the necessary information to beat The Devourer of Worlds.
He helped the Avengers fight Kang The Conqueror and Rama-Tut, a version of Kang.
Uatu help catch the Intergalactic criminal, The Living Laser.
Uatu helped catch the Rogue Watcher Aron. Aron was the nephew of Uatu, who wanted to create a Black Hole, which would end the Universe. Aron even stole Uatu's identity. Uatu, disciplined his nephew, but in doing so, he awakened the Leader of The Watchers known as The One. Uatu was exiled due to these actions.
Uatu witnessed and affected the events of The Civil War, Secret Invasion, Avengers Vs X-Men etc.
Uatu developed a close relationship with Nova and helped him on many occasions.
The Whole Original Sin comic series, revolved around the murder of Uatu. This story-line is very good and worth giving a read.
Even though Uatu was under the oath of Non-Interference, Uatu broke his oath, 337 times, which presents how much he loved the people of Earth.
Uatu was not an ordinary being, he had some of Universe's finest tech, from various times and had many powers like:-
Telepathy :- Uatu had such telepathic prowess, he could render himself Invisible, by using telekinesis and controlling certain parts of the brain.
Illusionist :- Uatu could disguise himself as anyone like the Skrulls.
His Energy matches that of Galactus.
Teleportation
Time Travel :- He often traveled through time to observe Earth at its different stages.
Flight
Immortality :- He can't die of Natural Causes.
Uatu was said to be the most powerful being in the universe. He is capable of making things reality almost like a Nexus Being and has tremendous Physical Power. He is one, who cannot be killed easily.
He is The Watcher...
