Mephisto... Die-hard Marvel fans have wanted this character to appear in the MCU for such a long time. The right-hand man of Thanos in his horrific endeavours, a very untrustworthy being and ruler of his own pocket reality known otherwise as Hell or Hades, not the ones here on Midgard but these are just words which are somewhat similar to his realm.
The character as said by its creators was inspired by Mephistopheles, of the Faust legend or in layman's terms a fallen angel. Mephisto seeks human souls, to trap them in his pocket reality and to enslave them till eternity.
The question which may arise in your mind is why are we talking about Mephisto now?
As you already might know, with WandaVision episode 4 to release this Friday, the villain of this series is rumoured to be revealed in this episode. And the buzz going on throughout the whole fandom is that Mephisto is the villain of this exciting series.
This rumour is also supported by various events that have occurred in the first few episodes like Agnes saying such fishy dialogues here and there etc.
We will be bringing a post after episode 4 about this very topic if the villain appears in it!!
So let us now start with Who's Mephisto?
Mephisto in the comics has been shown responsible for various happenings in the Marvel Universe. Although he has pursued many things for himself, he has always wanted to corrupt the mind of The Silver Surfer and make use of his powers. But even after his devilish actions, Mephisto could not fulfil his aspiration. This is his major arc throughout the comics.
Mephisto has also been involved with characters like Ghost Rider and Doctor Strange.
Mephisto is a very powerful immortal entity who unlike Doctor Strange manipulates the dark side of magic. He has gained superhuman strength, time-altering abilities and even mastered the shape-shifting skills.
Even though Mephisto loves capturing souls, his weakness is that he requires some permission to capture them, which often is done through a contract. Like in the case of Johnny Blaze, he signs an agreement and becomes The Ghost Rider. His other vulnerability is the fragile nature of his reality and the fact that his powers reduce the longer he remains outside of his dimension.
Mephisto has already appeared in movies and TV shows. Mephisto provided viewers with a glimpse of himself in 'Spiderman And His Amazing Friends' episode 'Prison Plot'. He was also proposed to be showcased in the second season of the popular show 'Silver Surfer'.
Mephisto has already appeared in the films Ghost Rider and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
Personally, I would have liked Mephisto to be introduced to the MCU in the Infinity Saga, as in the comics he is seen various times with Thanos. But if the rumours about him appearing in Phase 4 or in WandaVision, turn out to be true, we are in for a treat.
I believe I have answered the question about Who is Mephisto?
This is all, for this post.
We will be bringing another post on Friday on WandaVision Episode 4.
